Curriculum Vitae

Reiner Giesa studied chemistry at the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany) and received his Diploma in organic chemistry in 1985. For his graduate research in macromolecular chemistry he joined the group of Prof. R. C. Schulz at the University of Mainz (Germany) and earned a Dr. rer. nat. degree in 1989. The graduate research was followed by a five year post-doctoral period at several research facilities in the USA. First, for one year at the IBM Almaden Research in San Jose, CA, where he worked with Willi Volksen on polyimides, then he joined Prof. Hans-Werner Schmidt's research group at the University of California in Santa Barbara, CA. To gain more experience in polymer and fiber processing, he joined the group of Prof. Richard Farris at UMass, Amherst, MA. In 1992 he returned to Hans-Werner Schmidt's group at UCSB, where he stayed until 1994 when he accepted a senior research position at the University of Bayreuth (Germany). There he is heading the "Laboratory for Polymer Processing and Testing" which is linked to the chair of Macromolecular Chemistry I and BIMF.

Research Areas

The research of Reiner Giesa is focused on the development and application of polymer processing and testing techniques on a gram-scale range. Areas of interest include the synthesis, properties, and processing of high performance polymers, such as polyimides, poly-aramides, polyesters, and thermoset materials. In addition to the bulk properties, the formation and characterization of fibers based on these materials is another field of expertise. Also the use and modification of photocrosslinkable systems was explored during several projects.
